I love this book.

I gave my last copy to a friend and really missed it. Finally bought myself a new copy and I'm so pleased to have it back. This book covers pretty much anything you ever wanted to ask about who we really are. It is written lovingly, clearly, and in a straight forward manner. I love to just open it at random and see what it has to say to me. It always hits close to home and makes me think.

FINALLY - Food I want to cook and eat

I absolutely love this book. I was able to see a bunch of the episodes of the TV show on YouTube and wrote down every single detail of each episode but now I have the whole thing right in front of me!!! I ADORE cooking in metric units, I bought a small and very easy to use scale on amazon.com for around $12 a while back and I'm constantly converting all my stupid US measuring units to metric. Why on earth would anyone try baking with out actually weighing ingredients ... I digress. The layout of each meal actually makes it easy to get the whole thing on the table in 30 minutes. I am an experienced cook with a good set of tools so I'm sure that helps as well but I've made the Steak Sarnie dinner and the Killer Jerk Chicken (my two favorites) several times and got them on the table in no time flat.

I did notice that one of the big differences between finding/sourcing ingredients here versus in the UK (or at Irish grocery stores that I am familiar with such as Superquin and the UK Marks & Spencer) is that packages are usually larger. You don't often find a small 250 gram sack of rice - we are jumbo size! And whole tinned tomatoes (Jools Favorite Pasta) usually come in giant 32 oz cans rather than the smaller ones. Oh well. I make very good use of the bulk bins at Whole Foods. There are also some differences in the names of the cuts of beef and a few veggies - just goole it if you really get stuck and don't know that aubergine and eggplant are the same thing. And Jamie's readers also have ready access to Marks & Spencer which is a high-end grocery story that stocks TONS of excellent prepared ingredients that are only starting to become common over here. I haven't seen cooked beets anywhere except for Whole Foods and that was a new product.

I've also gone back through some of Jamie's other family-friendly food books (Food Revolution) and converted some of the Indian curries into 30 minute meals too. I love the method for cooking Jerk chicken - wizz the marinade in the blender while browning the skin on the stove in your non-stick skillet and then finish the whole thing off by baking it right in the sauce in the oven.

This is now one of my favorite books and you really can get stuff on the table in 30 minutes; this is not your Rachel Ray tasteless crap. And I also find that this is truely home-chef friendly. I have a few other nice Jamie books that I don't think are as good for the average home chef.

Jamie brings such optimism to food preparation, it's a joy to use his techniques and actually make healthy, tasty food. The book lays it out: prep, timing, serving displays: everything the shows reveal, but in a fashion new cooks can absorb at their pace.

Cary Millsap is the former Vice President of Oracle's System Performance Group and the cofounder of Hotsos, a company dedicated to Oracle system performance. Hotsos provides performance-improvement tools for Oracle environments and also delivers training in the form of clinics and symposiums. Cary is also a founding member of the Oak Table Network (http://www.oaktable.net), an informal association of "Oracle Scientists" well known throughout the Oracle community.

Jeff Holt is one of the world's most productive Oracle performance optimization specialists. This is an Oracle classic....

In a style that will be appreciated by the beginner, intermediate and advanced DBA/Developer, Cary and Jeff introduce the reader to the world of the Oracle wait interface. This book has depth, the contents are full of meat, and it's not a rehash of every other Oracle book published in the last 10 years. In these pages is something for everyone. Cary introduces the wait interface, and how it can be used for tuning. The book presents the topic in a clear and concise fashion.
The book is full of detail such as concise information on the internal workings of Oracle trace files and how to use them to your advantage when tuning your Oracle database. They demonstrate the power of the 10046 event and it's potential.
Putting all of this together into a performance tuning method he calls Method-R, they lead us from tuning by guess work into a world of facts and using accurate measures to generate appropriate tuning responses.
This book IS required reading for any DBA who wants to be elevated to the level of a tuning deity. I've already dog eared a goodly number of pages!

I want to have an advantage over all the other Oracle DBAs! I've been reading Cary Millsap's papers since the 70s and always found them to be right on the money. His VLDB paper is a classic. He is THE Oracle guru. I'm only half-way through the book and consider it money well spent.

Performance tune Oracle to a new level

Another reviewer mentions "this book fills in all the gaps in analyzing Oracle performance that exist in other published works", and I disagree. This book creates gaps in most other Oracle performance analysis books. This is a tremendous book.
Some difficult material that is covered with detailed and simple explanations. If you can read and follow through with the examples you will definately come to understand even these parts.
The gaps Millsap and Holt create in other Oracle performance tuning books are 'assumptions', 'generalizations' and 'inaccuracy' because this book teaches the reader how to precisely identify user's Oracle performance problems, and exactly what to fix.
Having read this book in depth, I'll continue by saying this book also shows how to fix Oracle Performance problems. But, I almost guarantee if you are not prepared to learn the material, and follow the Method R, you may disagree this book shows 'how'.
This book is five stars because its the only reference currently available (first of class in my opionion) that provides 100% business value to Oracle performance tuning of existing systems (Oracle 7 through 10). Experience Oracle DBAs and Developers may have problems with this book because it will cause you to think about Oracle Performance in a new, refreshing way by directly improving user's response times.
Hopefully, you will read this book with an open mind and capture why Method R is so powerful to solve all sorts of Oracle performance tuning problems. Great job Millsap and Holt.

"Be proud of your days and you'll be content with your years..."

I don't know if Jennifer has ever heard the quote I used as the headline for my review, but I feel like that is the underlying theme for all of her books. I read the first two and loved them and have been waiting rather impatiently for this one to come out. I loved every bit of it! I am in a season of my life right now where it would be so easy to slip into a very casual way of presenting myself and keeping house( SAHM to three fantastic and busy children aged 6 and under.) However after reading Jennifer's books I was moved to clear out the unflattering or ill fitting clothes from my closet and only have garments that match with each other and fit well. The other day I woke up feeling exhausted from tending my baby all night, yet I had to get up and take my other children to some appointments we had scheduled for that day. What a relief it was to go into my closet and spend 15 seconds putting together a well fitting and matching outfit! I no longer save my nice clothes for when my children are older, but wear them now and it really makes me feel better about myself. I light candles and play beautiful music on my iPhone during the day and my mornings no longer feel quite as frantic. I sit down and talk with my children during lunch while drinking a cup of tea or coffee from a beautiful mug. I could go on and on(obviously) but I have to say following Jennifer's advice about living each day to the fullest, being present in the moment and elevating daily life to a beautiful experience has been some of the best advice I have ever received for this time in my life. From the bottom of my heart, Jennifer, I thank you. My days and my years will be beautiful.

Lovely book!

Lovely book! Yes, much of the advice should be common sense and yet for many people it is not. Yes, some of the material is in her previous book and on the blog, but the new book focuses more on the theme of poise and goes a bit more into the topic. I have always thought the goal of the blog and books were to encourage people to live better lives by providing encouragement and providing good role models and the book accomplishes that. It also provides a gentle reminder to keep working on ourselves.

Loved it just like the first two Madame Chic books

I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy of Polish Your Poise with Madame Chic: Lessons in Everyday Elegance, the long awaited third book by Jennifer L. Scott. It totally did not disappoint! Written in the same easy-going manner as Jennifer’s first two books, Polish Your Poise expands more fully on the concept of cultivating your poise and how this relates to your daily life.

Even though I’m very familiar with Jennifer’s blog and her first two books Lessons from Madame Chic and At Home with Madame Chic, there were still new takeaways for me.

There were plenty of beautifully worded reminders too in this lovely book, such as this:

“You might not be living your dream life right now, but if you’re serious about cultivating poise, you must change your perspective. Take pride in absolutely everything you do. Cleaning house. Filing those spreadsheets at work. Ironing your clothes. Dealing with that customer who walks through the door just as you’re about to close the shop. Cleaning the pots in your kitchen. Volunteering at your community’s spring fair. Take pride in what you do. Give it your all. Give it your full attention. Madame Chic took pride in everything that she did. She didn’t waste time griping about her lot in life. If she wanted to be doing something other than what she was doing, I would not have known.”

There were also many other sections I made notes on, to do with establishing routines, the helpfulness of having still moments throughout the day, exercises to do for good posture, the proper etiquette of greeting people (kiss or hug?) and a great chapter on ‘charming communication’.

Because I’ve watched Jennifer’s YouTube videos a lot and am very familiar with her voice, often when I was reading Polish Your Poise I could hear Jennifer’s voice reading it to me in my head – it was nice!

If you enjoyed Jennifer’s first two books – Lessons from Madame Chic and At Home with Madame Chic, you are sure to enjoy Polish Your Poise too. And if you are a new reader to Jennifer and her Daily Connoisseur blog I don't think need to read the first two books before this one to enjoy and get the most from it.

I hope you enjoy Polish Your Poise as much as I did, and a big thank you to Jennifer for generously sending me an advance copy.
