Drawing on many schools of feminist scholarship and on research from anthropology, history, sociology, social psychology, sociolinguistics, and cultural studies, Lorber explores different paradoxes of gender: why we speak of only two "opposite sexes" when there is such a variety of sexual behaviors and relationships; why transvestites, transsexuals, and hermaphrodites do not affect the conceptualization of two genders and two sexes in Western societies; why most of our cultural images of women are the way men see them and not the way women see themselves; why all women in modern society are expected to have children and be the primary caretaker; why domestic work is almost always the sole responsibility of wives, even when they earn more than half the family income; why there are so few women in positions of authority, when women can be found in substantial numbers in many occupations and professions; and why women have not benefitted from major social revolutions. Lorber argues that the whole point of the gender system today is to maintain structured gender inequality - to produce a subordinate class (women) that can be exploited as workers, sexual partners, childbearers, and emotional nurturers. Calling into question the inevitability and necessity of gender,she envisions a society structured for equality, where no gender, racial ethnic, or social class group is allowed to monopolize economic, educational, and cultural resources or the positions of power.

Maggie Berg is a professor in the Department of English at Queen’s University. A winner of the Chancellor A. Charles Baillie Award for Teaching Excellence, she held the Queen’s Chair of Teaching and Learning from 2009 to 2012.


Barbara K. Seeber is a professor in the Department of English at Brock University. She received the Brock Faculty of Humanities Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2014.

I have been a huge fan on Mary Calmes not for a while. I started with Jory and Sam and fell in love with them and then moved to Duncan and Aaron. When I came across this series I wasn't sure how I was going to like it but the fact that she was able to characterize them so well and with plenty of details was amazing. The story itself is great, there are so many things that they learn from each other in the series and I like that it was not rushed and not to slow either. I would recommend this book to many and have done so already.

Aside from the repeating relationship problems it's pretty good. The plot is suspenseful and dark but there's always the hope of the light at the end of the tunnel. The only major problem I have is the two leads (whose names I can't remember off the top of my head ATT) keep falling into the same problems because they don't really learn from their mistakes. And these are pretty big issues.

I love these characters!

I'd like to say this book was worth waiting for, but I really hate waiting. I will say it was absolutely fantastic and please, please let there still be more to come! Sometimes authors go a little too far with sequels - having a couple break-up, cheat, or other storylines that ruins the happiness from the first book. Thankfully, Calmes gave the couple some challenges that made for an engrossing story but kept the romance and characters true to themselves. Happily, the rich mythology was also expanded upon. I fell in love with Jin and Logan in Change of Heart, and was delighted to be with them again.

I expected this book to switch to new characters, Koren and Domin perhaps, but it stayed with Jin and Logan. Trusted Bond picks up right where the last book left off. The men are about to embark on the trip to Cairo, but Jin is still struggling with doubts. He fears that Logan will tire of him, that the mating bond is just a mystical thing and that Logan doesn't love him for himself. Realistic doubts. When his life is put in danger from someone in his past, Jin will realize just how important that bond is to him.

Overall, this was a great sequel that I could not put down. I read it in one sitting. There was a lot of resolution, but also room for more. This could easily be a series, and I would be first in line for each and every installment.

Long before he wrote Jurassic Park, before he scripted blockbuster movies like Twister, before he created the groundbreaking TV series ER, Michael Crichton was an honors student at Harvard Medical School - and writing paperback suspense novels on the side, under the top-secret pen name "John Lange." Early Michael Crichton as he learned the ropes

Thank goodness for Hard Case Crime for getting these early Michael Crichton books back in print. The John Lange series of books have varying degrees of success but all of them are fascinating and entertaining. Here in Drug Of Choice you can see Crichton trying out concepts he'd explore in more detail in later novels and movies. Here, a fabulous resort promises the ultimate fabulous getaway, but then things go wrong...sound like Jurassic Park or Westworld? How about the manipulation of media using advanced science...sound like Crichton's film Looker ? Yep. There's even an odd similarity to Coma... a film MC wrote and directed but was based on Robin Cook's novel ( which came after Drug Of Choice... maybe Cook read this one too ? )
It is an early novel before MC became a blockbuster machine, so, his story telling skills are in development here... the medical mystery that kicks the story off is fascinating, but the climax of the story veers into some shaky ground, ending with one of Crichton's patented notes of ambiguity. But overall the book is a fun breezy read and a must have for fans of Crichton. Not as solid or assured as his later household name books, but an entertaining tale that may be more interesting for seeing Crichton trying out concepts he'd later perfect...

Okay bordering on good

This book is typical of Crichton's early work.

Unlike the contemporary "A Case of Need" or the later "Jurassic Park," Crichton steers clear of any kind of technical detail (whether medical, scientific, or otherwise). That makes for a relatively short but engaging book. I was never bored while reading this, but only spent something like 2-3 hours to make it through the entire story. Realistically, it could almost be classed as a short story rather than a novel.

Not much to add, I suppose. The Amazon synopsis covers the plot fairly well.

Dopey (But Readable) Hot Mess

This is the fourth of the Hard Case Crime John Lange/Michael Crichton reissues that I've read and I'm amazed at how the quality and tone of each book wildly varies. Drug of Choice is a late 60's culture themed conspiracy thriller. As other reviewers have noted, the book presages themes in future Crichton novels and movies (Westworld, Jurassic Park, Terminal Man). Many ideas and concepts about consumerism, mind control and America's drug dependency are floated here, but the execution is clumsy and cartoonish. But, Crichton being Crichton, the reading is breezy and the pages turn easily. For Crichton completists only.

Did you know that much of your character, behaviour and relationship to other people has to do with being more introvert or extrovert? This book is a revelation!

Based on scientific research and long experience as a coach, Löhken explains in simple words what are typical traits of extroverts and introverts and how this plays a key role in human interaction and different situations in life. However, she does not just put the reader in one box or the other: Most people have both introvert and extrovert characteristics, but might find themselves more on one side of the scale or the other. The book is written with a lot of humour, examples and even personal anecdotes which makes it fun to read and work with. And - the most important thing - there is no judgement about intoverts and extroverts. Both are equally valuable to society and professional life. But introverts are sometimes underestimated or, even though they present the majority of the population, remain unseen.

Being introvert, acording to Loehken, does not mean being shy, uncertain or unable to communicate. Instead, introverts are described as persons who, besides other typical character features, are very independent and who need some time for themselves to recharge the batteries" after social gatherings, busy meetings or noisy business trips. On the other hand, introverts have certain typical qualities which they can learn to make use of in a strategic manner. And this is what the book is about.

Equally important, the book will 1) sharpen knowledge of China’s recent socio-economic change and political agenda, 2) build a greater awareness of Chinese cultural, sexual and ethical values and 3) offer new perspectives on ‘Chineseness’ and Chinese same-sex identity.

Uniquely, it explores the emergence of Chinese same-sex identity through understanding the everyday, lived same-sex experience, amid China’s opening up to cultural, sexual and economic globalisation. This understanding is based on a culturally sensitive framework which accommodates the diverse and sometimes paradoxical articulation of same-sex identity in urban China. It come sto the conclusion that same–sex identity in china is articulated in a paradoxical way: open and decentred, but at the same time, nationalist and conforming to state control.
