All these dangers can not dissuade those hardy souls who brave the New Zone. But whatever their motives, however great their courage, a new power is arising and its vicious plan threatens to destroy them all.
Major Tarasov, a Spetsnaz commander turned renegade, knows the New Zone?s darkest secrets. While in a land far away, he receives alarming messages from the Exclusion Zone. Is an old friend in danger? Does someone else know the secrets he discovered? Or could it be a trap set by his former masters to lure him back?

Welcome back to the Zone. Both Zones. Both homes.
By Lord Ocampo
First, do not let the author's name be a distraction: Balázs Pataki is actually John Mason's real name, so if you enjoyed "Southern Comfort" because of its author's quality writing, know that it is guaranteed.
On to the book. Southern Comfort was a pleasant surprise among the videogame novel crowd, which sadly often delivers rushed-out books, deaf to game lore, mere spills of action sequences with game references for a background. Nothing more. Most people have become used to game-based novels being simple, shallow quick tales. Not Southern Comfort. That novel delivered a tough story, carefully wrapped in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series' best asset: atmosphere. Then it added a bold move of its own crop: a New Zone, with new mutants, new perils, yet the same Soviet wraith and its offspring looming above the story of a military mission gone awry. Furthermore, fresh Easter Eggs alternated with touching side-quests, such as the Captain's. Back away if you didn't at least hold your breath over that tale's conclusion. As for the novel itself, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. followers got a new hero: Major Tarasov arose from support character to full-fledged star and came face to face with a new "persona" for the misterious Noosphere. Still, Tarasov himself reminded us of the real protagonist, not just of the novel but of the whole saga: the Zone itself... or herself. Depends on the viewer.
Thus, the key word for Northern Passage is MORE. But not just "more" as in "generously apply S.T.A.L.K.E.R. lore and improved shocking sequences all over the previous formula". Oh no. This time, Balázs Pataki throws the Mason mask away and means business. He walks himself into the Zone. He walks us into the Zone. Both Zones. We can notice the author's confidence morph into a richer, fluent narrative. New characters join the previously known cast not just to fill the room up but to bring forth new shades of personality. While some of the newcomers may feel unbearable to some readers, they do serve a purpose, only known to the Zone, which may or may not choose to share its... her?, wisdom with us.
There's more of the Zone. The New Zone now sits like a familiar place, but a new, ravaging danger arises from its womb. The Exclusion Zone is the new setting, but it, her, stands familiar to all who have played the game. Most of the action unfolds in the area around Chernobyl, places we've come to love. The author's writing will make readers feel the raindrops falling on their shoulders, the cold mist in the chilly Zone dawns, the wind passing through the leaves in Pripyat... And danger, ever present danger. As we've also come to love it.
And yet, you don't need to have played the games to fully enjoy this book, for the tales within are enjoyable to anyone who loves a dark, perilous setting first, and whoever is passionate of the Chernobyl incident further on.
There's more of the factions. Readers get to have a very intimate look into the fascinating Tribe, a powerful group of former Marines who decided to establish a stronghold in the New Zone. Bandits make their appearance in Afghanistan as well, with a very clever villain who is new to the books but an old acquaintance to veterans of the games. And a new "faction" makes its debut, a faction bent on cleaning the New Zone of any contamination. Only, it does not mean the radiation nor the mutants.
There's more mutants. As a matter of fact, I dare you not to get excited at a very particular creature wandering around our favorite ghost city. Where will you find it, you may ask? Sorry, Stalkers: that's a mission for you to enjoy and for me not to spoil.
There's more character development: Mikhailo Tarasov is back, but now he not only has a mission to follow, which would be a sad copy/paste of the previous book. Instead, we see Tarasov caught in greater events. Which is good, because last time the Thing beneath the City of Screams -sorry, not spoiling Southern Comfort that much here- turned him into a kind of superhuman. Problem is, he's not alone now. And not even a superhuman can win against an army, can he? Best of all, Tarasov is kind of lost amidst several storms raging beside and above him. Some he can see, others... if only he evers finds out.
There's more old characters. Some we haven't seen since Shadow of Chernobyl. 'Nuff said.
As for the content you can touch: good news, there's been an improvement on type selection. Classic S.T.A.L.K.E.R. PDA images depict important book info, such as vehicles, military buildings, characters and maps. If only the book could sound as the game PDA, it would be perfect. And as you may have noticed already, this story is longer than Southern Comfort.
So more is good, as long as it is well measured. And Pataki cares about measure. If you were impressed by Southern Comfort, Northern Passage will blow you out of your shoes and rocket you into whichever Zone you prefer. Only remember to bring enough vodka for the journey.
Mark my words: you're gonna need it.

Southern Entry/Northern Pride
By JC Loner
For years, non-Russian S.T.A.L.K.E.R. fans have wanted (bordering on needed) some form of fiction regarding their favorite Hell hole on Earth. Last year, they got it in the form of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Southern comfort.
That book was great on it's own, mixing a near constant feeling of fear and wonder. Needless to say, a sequel was welcome.
Continuing off from the first book, Major Tarasov struggles to his goals as valiantly as possible, given circumstances, allies...and enemies. There is no shortage of opposing forces for him.
I will not spoil anything, but seeing as the book is more of what we English-speaking Stalkers want (with it being 80 pages longer!), it is very hard to pass up for any fan of the series.

Good Read

I'm a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. fanatic and think this is a great addition to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe. The author uses some characters and locations we're already familiar with and added his own credible characters. This is a follow-up to his book, Southern Comfort. I hope there will be another.
