You will laugh out loud as Dev Haskell, P.I. is thwarted in the most hilarious of ways as he tries to score. The lengths he will go protect the damsel who doesn't know she is in distress will make you appreciate his tenacity. Morton, the golden retriever is back...and in fine form and the villian in this newest Mike Faricy book is the master con man. Women, never fear! Dev is on the way!

A Very Fun Read

Another Mike Faricy winner. I have read and enjoyed all of the Dev Haskill romps and I was especially pleased to see his buddy Morton is back. Anyone who has owned a big, happy dog can't help laughing out loud. I also love Louie. I don't know what Mike thinks he looks like, but I picture Danny deVito.

Dev and Heidi

I've read a lot of Dev Haskell tales and have always found them entertaining. Dev is always the same, always interested in new women (who seem to get him into trouble most of the time), and every story has pretty much the same characters and a lot of drinking. He is always finding himself being accused of murder but always finding a way to get out of trouble.

Mike Faricy's Dev seems to me to be the male's favorite, much like Janet Evanovitch's Stephanie can be preferred by women. Both have sort of a standard script but different adventures. Both have a lot of humor.

In this story Dev's "friend with benefits" Heidi is smitten with a man who Dev finds out is a scam artist. She is so smitten that he can't easily convince her of his three ex-wives, that he is in debt, that he is not an ex-Seal. His task is to accumulate enough evidence that she does not decide to marry this guy.

The Ideal Texas Primer

For a relative newcomer-resident like me, this book is the ideal Texas primer. Parker is at once an elegant narrative writer and a probing analyst who uses affecting personal anecdote to rivet a strong sense of place even as he shrewdly slides into place the game pieces that will determine the future of America’s most storied state and one of its leading political and economic pivots. “The culture of Texas seems a hard thing to stamp out of existence, even as it changes,” Parker writes—and indeed it’s the author’s ability to limn that change that makes “Lone Star Nation” such a fascinating read.

It's not the old cow town anymore.

The author begins his story in the late 80’s; a college student with few job prospects in San Antonio, he drives east, then north. In 2000, he comes back, and it’s booming. Parker illustrates the story of Texas as having internal as well as out-of-state migrations, both in the 80’s, when he left, and present day, when people are moving in. Texas has always attracted migrants, for cattle, oil, and agriculture. Even by the 1970’s, Texas had great cities, like Dallas, which housed Fortune 500 companies. Yet even with the wealthy cities, the state’s record on education, crime, health, and race relations were lousy. He blames it in part on the migrations.

Parker writes that in the 1980’s, former rust belters came to Texas, and strengthened the GOP’s position. Fast forward to 2015 however, and the famous Republican hold on Texas is fading. The new Texans are young, better educated, entrepreneurial, and often non-white, and they’re less dependent on oil, cattle, and agriculture. There are fewer Fortune 500 jobs, but lots of little ones. Not surprising, given that CD stores have closed, Blockbuster is finished, Circuit City and Best Buy have downsized.

One change that the writer explores is how the state’s attitude towards Gay Americans has changed. Houston, for instance, elected Annise Parker as its mayor, and I guarantee that 20 years ago this would not have happened. The first things she dealt with were typical city problems; clearing ditches, unblocking sewers, and though she can’t take credit for the building boom, nobody want to do business in a city that’s filthy. She even proposed a law banning discrimination against gays and lesbians in the workplace. Her following among women voters, gay voters, and minorities is powerful.

Texas has always had a dependence on large-scale business, like agriculture and oil, to sustain its economy. The problem was that the these industries were somewhat anti-technology, and it’s not surprising, given that solar and wind power would’ve cut into big oil’s market. The 2013 drought hit the agricultural sector hard, and the farmers, certain that they were fool-proof, had no water-savvy irrigation technology that the Israelis use. Corn fields withered, cattle died, deer had to eat oleander leaves to survive and it killed them off, and coyotes were so desperate that they started killing and eating cats. Conservative Texans in the George Bush mold were not into technology and innovation, and they ended up losing.
Parker is not, however, without his criticism of the new Texas. In order not to raise taxes, Texas raised tuition rates for state and local colleges (up to $50,000) which makes it harder for lower-income students, often minorities. There are ways to alleviate the problem, however; tuition can be lowered for majors that the state needs, like nursing, physical therapy, early child education, and criminal justice.

I always imagined Texas the way I saw it on Dallas; a state full of gruff, loud, conservative businessmen, dead set against any kind of change. The state’s death row would be working overtime, executing multiple convicts daily, and the schools, when not paddling the kids, would be checking to make sure nobody was teaching evolution. The change, however, has arrived, not by force, but through the “old guard” dying out.

Call it “intelligent design,” I suppose.

Interesting and Insightful

A must read for students of Texas culture, politics, or history; or anyone interested in learning more about what America will become.

I'm a former resident of the Lone Star state, and frequent visitor who tries to keep up with its traditions and changes. Mr. Parker very much "gets it" when it comes to Texas. He has written a fascinating book that puts in crisp, and concise words the changes rapidly happening across Texas, and how they will in turn change America.

Having recently finished reading Fehrenbach's classic "Lone Star" about the history of the state, I find Parker's view of the "new Texas" to be as important as Fehrenbach's telling of its past. I don't know if this book will be come a classic, but I'm confident that Parker is on the right track.

.......The Buddha spoke, “Community, the Way of Enlightenment can tear down the walls of ignorance, just as light can disperse the shadows. The Four Noble Truths, Impermanence, Non-self, Dependent Co-arising, the Four Establishments of Mindfulness, the Seven Factors of Awakening, the Three Gates, and the Noble Eightfold Path have all been proclaimed to the world like a lion’s roar, dispelling countless false doctrines and narrow
--The lion is king of the beasts. When he leaves his den, he stretches and gazes out over all the directions. Before seeking his prey, he lets forth a mighty roar that causes the other creatures to tremble and flee.
- Birds fly high, crocodiles dive beneath the water, foxes slip into their holes. Even village elephants, decked in fancy belts and ornaments and shaded by golden parasols, run away at the sound of that roar.
-Community, the proclamation of the Way of Enlightenment is like that lion’s roar! …..False doctrines fear and tremble. When Impermanence, Non-self, and Dependent Co-arising are proclaimed, all those who have long sought false security in ignorance and forgetfulness must awaken, celestial beings as well as human beings. When a person sees the dazzling truth, he exclaims, ‘We embraced dangerous views for so long, taking the impermanent to be permanent, and believing in the existence of a separate self. We took suffering to be pleasure and look at the temporary as if it were eternal. We mistook the false for the true. Now the time has come to tear down all the walls of forgetfulness and false views.’
-Community, the Way of Enlightenment allows humanity to remove the thick veil of false views.
-When an enlightened person appears, the Way echoes like the majestic sound of the rising tide. When the tide rises, all false views are swept away. -Community, people are easily caught by four traps. The first is attachment to sensual desires. The second is attachment to narrow views. The third is doubt and suspicion. The fourth is false view of self.
-The Way of Enlightenment helps people overcome the four great traps.
-Community, the teaching on dependent co-arising will enable you to overcome every obstacle and trap. Contemplate the nature of interdependence in your daily life—in your body, feelings, mind, and objects of mind.”
-The next day in the main hall, Ananda repeated the Buddha’s Dharma talk. He named it Sutra of the Lion’s Roar.

Wonderful book

I grew up / raised in the Protestant faith, and about a year ago, I discovered Buddhism and started reading all the books I could find and joined a couple of forums about Buddhism and non-duality. This particular book (OPWC) has become my bible...It tells the story of the Buddha in an enchanting and engaging way, by Master Hanh. Plus, it tells you pretty much all you need to know - the basics of Buddhism and gives clear understanding of how it works.

A thoughtful view of the Buddha's life

As some people may not know; there was an assistant to the Buddha called Anadda who observed his every word. That are the basis of his Sutta's. The language then was Pali. The monk Thick Nhat Hanh (author) in my opinion did a very good translation. This allows westerners a better view of people's basic behavior that is consistent to today's suffering and unhappiness in society. These are direct life experiences from a human being who lived @2500 years ago. His purpose was to find the answer to the escape in the cycle of life. And give any person a blueprint for acquiring peace and enlightenment in today's world of turmoil.

About the Author

Scott Roberts is a Principal Development Lead in the SQL Server group at Microsoft Corporation. Previously, he was a Development Lead on the InfoPath team, and was involved with InfoPath since its inception. While in the InfoPath team, he led the development of many features for designing and editing InfoPath forms. Scott is also the author of Programming Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 (Microsoft Press, 1999) and numerous technical articles and publications.

Hagen Green is a Senior Program Manager at Microsoft Corporation, working on the Windows Phone Communications team. He previously led the User Experience Platform test team in SharePoint Foundation. He contributed chapters on InfoPath to Visual Studio Tools for Office: Using Visual Basic 2005 with Excel, Word, Outlook, and InfoPath (Addison-Wesley, 2006), and Visual Studio Tools for Office: Using C# with Excel, Word, Outlook, and InfoPath (Addison-Wesley, 2005).

good book

First of all, this is not a step-by-step book. Most books that are have "step-by-step" in the title. The book tends to describe the functionality and capability of InfoPath in a broad conceptiual sense with some samples to help you follow along. This allows a more free-form experience where you can read what you're intersted in but there isn't an overly sequential, structured learning path.
I like it so far, exactly what I was looking for.

Too lengthy, too pricey, Step By Step is better

I have changed my opinion and now recommend this over InfoPath Step By Step by Shadravan and Rogers.Using Microsoft InfoPath 2010 with Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) if you are trying to buy only one InfoPath book. Farther into this project, I see that the no-code development techniques in S&R gets me only 80% of the way to the goal-- replacing a legacy app that evolved over several years. To reproduce all the features of the legacy app in an InfoPath form requires code-behind in either C# or VB.Net using the InfoPath object model and the .Net XPathNavigator class. I'm docking it a star because InfoPath no-code basics are covered better in S&R. If money is no object, it's still better to do the first several chapters of S&R to quickly see how to develop a no-code InfoPath form and deploy it in SharePoint Forms Services, but then the chapters in this book to learn how to use C# or VB code-behind to add additional features.

Embedded Examples Are Horrendous

While the book is pretty detailed in its coverage of InfoPath 2010, it can be be very difficult to follow the examples, which tend to be embedded in the text of the book (i.e.: not broken out into clear and easy to follow steps). The examples often tend to gloss over critical steps, and waste time on much more obvious details. If only the examples were better constructed and presented, the book would be worthy of a more positive review.

Jason Welker teaches International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement Economics at Zurich International School in Switzerland, where he has lived with his wife since 2008 (and as of 2012, his new daughter). Great Review Book!

Great book for reviewing. I bought this book to revise for my IB Economics HL exam in may. It explained all the key concepts, explained the diagrams and gave examples, it really helped me understand the topic of Microeconomics even better. I would recommend this book for any AP or IB students, it really gives you a detailed overview of macroeconomic objectives.

Let me begin by saying that I have known Hilary Barrett for going on eight years now, and this review will be slightly prejudiced in her favor; Not because I know she'll read the review but because her reputation precedes her publication. The book itself is an excellent quality book and gives the I Ching (Yijing) student a wonderful insight into the machinations of this ancient oracle.
What impressed me, was Hilary's ability to put into everyday English what Scholars from Ancient China and throughout time all over the world have debated and published and re-published for most of the History of Mankind. The 'Yi' is considered by most to be one of the oldest written 'anything' in the world. Surviving massive book burnings, political upheavals and just time itself, Ms. Barrett, like the original, has kept it short and to the point without compromising philosophical integrity, or mystical insight. In this day and age of mass media and marketing it's a pleasure to know that some still have the ability to convey to the reader the beauty of the work. I am sure the (In)spiration for much of her work was none other that the message of the work itself "talking to her' and for this I am grateful that one more generation may have the ability to understand that magical world of Oracles and the I Ching that have guided ordinary people and Emperors alike throughout the ages.

I Ching- For Any Level of Practitioner

Not being a writer, it will be difficult to do this book proper justice; but here goes....
"I Ching; Walking Your Path, Creating Your Future" is easy to use and is full of wisdom, virtue and insight. If one is a beginner to the Oracle, you need this book. If you have already spent a few years communing with the I Ching, you really need this book to round out your understanding.
This book is well organized and both sensible and comprehensible (something that can't be said about many of the interpretations of "I Ching"). The Introduction starts with "What Is the I Ching"; showing the basic structure and definitions of lines, trigrams and hexagrams and then continues with a straightforward approach to consulting the Oracle. Each Hexagram (chapter) is introduced with perceptive "Key Questions", In the "Oracle", classic imagery is followed by lucid commentary. The chapter continues with "Image"; a kind of contemplative impression of the Hexagram, followed by "Sequence" which shows the connection to the preceding Hexagram and its place in the procession of Hexagrams. Finally comes the "Changing Lines" with a wonderfully clear discussion on the "heart" of each Line. If this seems confusing to the Beginner, it won't be when you open the book.
All this talk of "lucid" and "clear" and "insight" reminds me that the author, Hilary Barrett, has an I Ching website, "[...]", that is more than worth the time to check out. I've been an inspired follower of this website and Hilary Barrett for several years and have been eagerly awaiting this book. It's been well worth the wait.

still blown away by Hilary's work

The price I see on Amazon makes me feel like weeping- to think this book could be so undervalued. But if you are a person with an interest in buying a guide to the oracle, you are in so much luck.

I have many books- translations, commentaries- on the I Ching but none of them really hold a candle to this one. I have had it since it came on the market..it is still and always my "go-to- guide" when I ask the oracle a question and need help with interpretation. Hilary Barret's book has an extraordinary clarity and a distillation of the oracle's wisdom that I have yet to find anywhere else- nor do I need to, actually. I never fail to come away feeling wholly answered and even with a new insight...this is no small matter because I have been a student of the I Ching for 25 years and counting.

I cannot recommend this book more highly.
