Excellent Page-Turner Romance

Winning the Deputy's Heart is a very sweet romance. I read it in one setting, and I loved every page of the story.

I loved that the deputy wasn't after a young woman, but wanted a more mature wife. It also made him more likeable.

Abigail doesn't know her husband very well, of course, so when a young saloon girl tells her that she has an affair with her husband, she doesn't know what to think, and she's haunted by jealousy. I liked the way she dealt with that feeling, because yes, it can harm a marriage.

Great book, looking forward to the next one :)

I have now read the first two books in this series and can't wait to read the third. I know they can be read as a story by itself but this also would have been a great story as one book.

It was nice, short, romance novel.

I liked it. It was a short, clean romance. Focused a lot on how heroine has to overcome jealousy that comes about from local saloon gall making trouble for the couple. Heroine does pray for help with her jealousy as hero never gives her reason to doubt him.

Heroine has had it rough, but she is ready to settle down. She agrees to marry deputy of small town as mail order bride. He was looking for someone more mature and older to settle with. I agreed, considering he had tough job and needed someone that would understand the type job he had. Unfortunately, he is in high demand and there is a situation he is called off too right upon the time he is asked to kiss the bride. This leaves very little time between them, until he settles this issue. While he never encourages the saloon gall, and even scolds her for the way he treats heroine, this still doesn't stop her from making trouble for them.

Things come to head when heroine's jealousy gets the better of her and she goes to see things for herself. This actually places her in danger, but is also allows for her to kill two birds with one stone (as saying goes). We get satisfying ending.

This was short, clean read. I enjoyed reading it with my KU. I also enjoy reading other stories by author. Would recommend this read.

Good for Newbies and Pros Alike

A nice guide to designing your own fabric to be printed by Spoonflower. The sample projects were very interesting and gave me some great ideas for my projects. The recipe card tea towels are a particularly great idea if you happen to have something written out by a beloved cook in your life. So many derivations from that simple idea have been teeming in my mind. My family had better watch out next Christmas!
As for the instructional quality. I'm a graphic design and prepress professional who has done a fair amount of training newbies over the years. The basic how-tos are detailed enough to get a beginner started without being overwhelming. This is a VERY good thing!
If you've never done graphic design on computers, I suggest supplementing this book with a beginner-level how-to book for the software you happen to be using. (Those "For Dummies" books are a good start.)

an excellent book for demystifying digitally-printed textiles

I suppose that i should begin with a few disclosures, as i am hardly an impartial reviewer. I bought the book at the book release party on-site at the Durham production facility. Spoonflower is a local company with offices literally just up the street from my house. I count more than one friend (and one alumna of the graduate program in which i teach) among their employees, and I have been a customer and designer of theirs for years. That said, i don't have any affiliation with this book and its authors beyond being a fan of the text.

So, what's the book like?

One could argue that it is a book-length infomercial for Spoonflower, which i suppose is technically true, in that there's a lot of information about how specifically one can use the company to produce textile designs, wallpaper, and gift wrap (the three products they print). But on a general level, there's an enormous amount of useful information about the basics of print designs--everything from how to use both analog and digital tools to create your designs, to how one might create a seamless repeat in a range of different configurations. The book does touch on some of the more "pro" programs for digital design, but also illustrates techiques and methods that are decidedly low-tech and non-intimdating for those who have no proficiency with, say, Photoshop.

The first section is a sort of overview of textiles and design--discussions of everything from types of fabrics one can print on (knits/wovens, fiber contents) to the definition of digital design terms like raster and vector based image files, hex codes, dpi, and so forth.

The structure of the second half of the book is project-based, with specific how-to craft projects, each of which addresses a different technique or medium. So, an example of a simple project for working with a digital photograph is the Doppelganger Dog Pillow (which involves printing a photo of your pet and making a pillow out of it), whereas a project addressing working with text involves creating a repeat for the Typographic Wrapping Paper.

Overall, it's an excellent book for demystifying digitally-printed textiles (and papers), which will appeal to hobby crafters, fashion designers, costumers, prop artisans, interior decorators, scrapbookers, and sewing enthusiasts. In terms of its specific appeal to theatre professionals, it's a good book to have in your arsenal, though it covers little new ground not already addressed by Kimberly Kight's Field Guide to Fabric Design.

Fabulous Guide To Designing Fabric And Having It Printed!

Fabulous! I vote in Spoonflower's contest each week. I would look at the entries longingly wishing I could also design fabric. Well, now I can thanks to this wonderful book! Every step is spelled out in detail. Plus, there are many terrific projects included.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in designing and having fabric printed plus anyone interested in great fabric design projects!

An engrossing story of a brutal age....

The saga of Hernando Ruiz - contemptously referred to as the Nazarene for been the offspring of an Arab girl and the Catholic priest who raped her - has all the trappings of an epic - history, adventure, horrendous cruelty, deceit, hate, fortunes made and lost, love, betrayal and revenge. Spain's late 16th - early 17th centuries history is not widely-known therefore the detail may well be inclined to bog down some readers hence I too was tempted to down-grade the review to a 4 star read. However on the positive side the exciting woven tale of Hernando's trials, triumphs and loves completely consumed me for several days so my five star rating serves to acknowledge that. As mentioned by another reviewer Falcones is a consumnate author cut from the same cloth as Follett's "Pillar of the Earth" and I will certainly be following his future books with keen interest.

A Must Read Book

The story is full of sacrifice, pain and suffer during those sad times of Spanish history. It is a book where you will need to read beyond the words, it is not just a story about historical events, it is an emotional journey, a love story and a beautiful painful one. It is a book that you will evoke raw emotions in you, which you should be prepared for. I definitely would recommend this book.

This book and his other one titled Cathederal of the Sea are in the same league as The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet, very easy to read with good story lines throughout. His histoical account of the Spain is very revealing to someone who before this would have been in the dark about the religous turmoil that the country suffered.

Leer a Claudia es una delicia, pero si encima te reencuentras con personajes que ya te habían dejado una espinita, es mucho más fascinante. En esta ocasión nos encontramos ante la historia de David King, principal afectado de lo que sucede en Enlazando el destino (una preciosa novela que recomiendo). Era un personaje que como he dicho ya me había marcado y que necesitaba su propia historia y sobretodo ser feliz.

La trama que ha elegido Claudia, no solo es mu actual, sino también muy difícil a la hora de desarrollarla, pero ella lo logra con una historia muy bien narrada y con un romance sublime. Un asesinato, una investigación y una forense. En principio todo muy técnico, pero la autora lo hace todo tan ameno y sencillo que la historia se lee de maravilla. Además, imprime a los personajes de una sensibilidad que te hace sentir en todo momento lo que sienten.

In this latest effort to popularize the sciences, City University of New York professor and media star Kaku (Hyperspace) ponders topics that many people regard as impossible, ranging from psychokinesis and telepathy to time travel and teleportation. His Class I impossibilities include force fields, telepathy and antiuniverses, which don't violate the known laws of science and may become realities in the next century. Those in Class II await realization farther in the future and include faster-than-light travel and discovery of parallel universes. Kaku discusses only perpetual motion machines and precognition in Class III, things that aren't possible according to our current understanding of science. He explains how what many consider to be flights of fancy are being made tangible by recent scientific discoveries ranging from rudimentary advances in teleportation to the creation of small quantities of antimatter and transmissions faster than the speed of light. Science and science fiction buffs can easily follow Kaku's explanations as he shows that in the wonderful worlds of science, impossible things are happening every day. (Mar. 11)

But his grasp of his subject is perhaps trumped by his knowledge of science fiction." While Kaku writes in language designed to captivate nonscience readers, it's his references to pop culture—Star Trek to Terminator 3—that clarify his fringe physics. (Those wishing to explore the topic further can refer to Kaku's detailed footnotes.) To critics' delight, Kaku also investigates the moral issues of futuristic technology that SF does so well and asks provoking questions about the fate of humankind. The only complaints? Kaku omits a few obvious SF parallels, and, more seriously, readers who don't enjoy that genre may find less of interest here.

If only Jules Verne could read this book.

Michio Kaku's Physics of the Impossible: A Scientific Exploration into the World of Phasers, force Fields, Teleportation, and time Travel is just the right book at the right time. In fact, Michio Kaku's sytle reminds me just a bit like Carl Sagan in that he tries to make scientifically difficult topic easy to understand. Kaku's mission here is to spread knowledge and that he does very well.

There are other books similar to Physics of the Impossible. Some have been mentioned by other reviewers. I'd like to mention The Science of Star Wars by Jeanne Cavelus and The Physics of Star Trek by Lawrence M. Krauss and Stephen Hawking. Like Physics of the Impossible, both of these works attempt to apply hard scientific facts-of-life to popular ideas in modern fiction. What Kaku does is to organize his ideas into classes of impossibility and here lies an important element of this book.

Michio Kaku is a born communicator which is why he is so often seen on television and why his books are so popular. He is at his best, in my opinion, in Physics of the Impossible. Well written by an author that knows his material and wants to communicate his ideas, the book is sure to please and inform and stimulate the imagination.

I highly recommend Physics of the Impossible.

A fun, mind-bending journey!

This is probably Dr. Kaku's best popular work since Hyperspace or Visions. Here is a wide range of scientific possibilities to be explored. Dr. Kaku's gift is to make modern physics comprehensible to those of us without a mathematical background. In this book he uses his gift to explain how the standard model and string field theory (which he is coauthor of) can be applied to contemplation of some of our most wildest scifi dreams. The chapters are short and easily read in short sittings, which lends well to a book that stretches the imagination so dramaticaly. Dr. Kaku is also careful to remain objective in discussing different theoretical approaches which is an admirable feat given some of the topics ventured into in this book. If you enjoy cutting edge science, it doesn't get more cutting edge then this. Thank you Dr. Kaku for yet another wonderful journey.

Making Science accessible to the masses

I've been a big fan of Dr. Kaku since I first saw him on The Science Channel years ago, but this is the first book of his I've read.

In "The Physics of the Impossible," Michio Kaku explores the very subjects that fuels the imagination of those who love science fiction because of the possibilities it raises. Is Time Travel possible? What about Phasers, Force Fields, Teleportation, and Light Sabers? Could one really build a Death Star?

One of the great things about Dr. Kaku's approach is that he does not talk down to the lay person, but he writes just as he speaks, with a simple eloquence that makes these complex concepts accessible to the non-Physicist mind. And it is always clear just how much passion Dr. Kaku has for his work, and he easily passes that on to his audience through his words.

Another great thing about this book is that it's not only an education on the concepts of such things as String Theory and so much more, it's also an exploration of the history behind moderm Physics, dating back to the days of Isaac Newton and beyond. I learned so much about the triumphs, and even more surprising, the tragedies befalling many of the pioneers of modern science merely because they were people with concepts far ahead of their times.

I have to say that if you are a young physicist in the making, an older person who is simply fascinated in the subject of Science, a Science Fiction writer looking for deeper understanding of these subjects to inspire you in your writing, or just someone wanting to get better insight into the mysteries behind the nature of the universe, then this is definitely the book for you.

Great Memoir - great company.

Insomuch as this is a memoir and not a business management book, it's fantastic! The first part is pretty much all about the Yvon's early life (which makes me feel like less of a man lol), the history of Chouinard Equipment (future Black Diamond) and Patagonia, and the history of a few of it's offshoot sister companies. The 2nd part of the book describes various philosophies that Patagonia tries to employ in it's practices and dealings.

I found this history particularly interesting, especially given that Yvon had absolutely no business background, and throughout the book is very upfront on this fact. Describing the (sometimes comical) struggles he encountered, restructures needed and addressed, and culture developed, was very enjoyable.

Insomuch as the philosophies section is concerned, if you're familiar at all with Patagonia and it's dealings this will be pretty straightforward to you. I did enjoy the HR/benefits section, and was intrigued about Chouinard's take on innovation (borrowing, stealing, repurposing ideas ='s fast and effective) vs. invention (can be great, but takes time, is unpredictable, and doesn't guarantee value added vs. just cool). I think it was telling though that by far the longest section of this book in this section is the Environmental Philosophies section. Everyone who knows Patagonia knows this is important to them, and I thought it was telling of them to give it so much space in his book. Some of the figures - if somewhat outdated - are interesting (and scary).

If you're looking for a 'how to do business [like Patagonia]' rule by rule book, this probably wouldn't be the best starting point. For that, maybe try Yvon's other book, The Responsible Company. However, if you accept that this is a memoir about a man and the development of a company that cares deeply about it's value and understands the struggles therein, this book is great!

Filled with Soul

Let my people go surfing is the part biography and part company memoir by Patagonia founder, Yvon Chouinard. Born to French-Canadian parents, he moved to California at an early age. Always one connected to the outdoors, he would usually work so he would have enough to pay for his travels and climbing. He eventually founded a small firm that made climbing equipment, and that evolved into Patagonia.

Global warming is one of the biggest threats to mankind today. Despite the magnitude of the issue, governments and businesses are doing very little to combat the problem. Patagonia does everything it can to do its part. From scrutinizing parts in their clothing to subsidizing electric cards their employees purchase, they go above and beyond the norm held by most companies. Not only are these things good for the environment, but they're great for profits. Patagonia usually ends up making their money back in energy upgrades within a few years, sometimes sooner. If only more businesses could make the conscious effort to investigate energy savings, they would find an arena littered with profit.

Chounaird is fiercely independent. He openly criticizes the government, big business, and energy firms. He rightly points out that if everyone took take the long view, we would have a better society for workers, customers, and the environment. He lays out the various Patagonia philosophies in the second half of the book. The overlying theme, whether its' the financial or human resource philosophy seems to be: do the right thing, and profits will follow. Treat employees right. Give back to the environment. Use the best materials.

You really get an idea of how Yvon thinks, feels, and acts. He comes across as centered, humble, and responsible. As Patagonias sole owner, he can retain the company culture and vision he set without being grilled on profits, and cutting costs. Support Patagonia. It's good for the earth.

Inspiring... can it change what YOU think and do?

When Jim S. loaned me a copy of this book, Let My People Go Surfing: The Education of a Reluctant Businessman, by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard, I really expected it to be another contribution to the genre of business books regarding the topic "how I made my millions, and now you can, too."

If success can come from a formulaic process, there should be more millionaires running around, right?

But that's not what this book is about. Chouinard never claims that by following his plan, success is guaranteed. Instead, he discusses how his philosophy is entwined into all aspects of Patagonia, from how he treats his employees to what he expects from his suppliers to what he will not compromise on. So I bought my own copy.

It was inspiring to me, so much so that I tried to get my employer to develop, with the employees, a statement of Our Values that we could them apply to... everything. I even gave a copy of my boss.

No dice. We were to develop a "committee" to draft up a new mission statement. There's a process for obscuring values!

So, for me, it is a process of one, following the mantra of Margaret Mead's "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." I'm adding myself to that small group.

What does Chouinard claim?

First, he outlines a series of Values that Patagonia's board of directors adopted to drive the company's policies (p. 72-73). It begins with the statement, "We begin with the premise that all life on Earth is facing a critical time, during which survivability will be the issue that increasingly dominates public concern... The root causes of this situation include basic values embodied in our economic system, including the values of the corporate world. Primary among the problematic corporate values are the primacy of expansion and short-term profit over such other considerations as quality, sustainability, environmental and human health, and successful communities."

This statement then drives particular company operating decisions, including these statements (among others):

- "All decisions of the company are made in the context of the environmental crisis."
- "Maximum attention is given to product quality, as defined by durability, minimum use of natural resources... multifunctionalism, non-obsolescence, and the kind of beauty that emerges from absolute suitability to task."
- "Without giving its achievement primacy, we seek to profit on our activities. However growth and expansion are values NOT basic to this corporation."
- "To help mitigate any negative environmental consequences of our business activity, we impose on ourselves an annual tax of one percent of our gross sales, or ten percent of profits, whichever is greater. All proceeds of this tax are granted to local community and environmental activism."

What else does Chouinard claim?

"My first principle of mail order argues that 'selling' ourselves and our philosophy is equally important to selling product" (p. 129).

"Patagonia's image arises directly from the values, outdoor pursuits, and passions of its founders and employees... Our image is a direct reflection of who we are and what we believe" (p. 147).

"At Patagonia, making a profit is not THE goal because the Zen master would say profits happen 'when you do everything else right" (p. 160).

"Today, most Americans are aware we are facing an environmental crisis. In surveys, 75 percent identify themselves as environmentalists. But you are what you do, not what you say you are...The thought is, I'm not the problem; therefore, I'm not the solution" (p. 226). "The difficulty of convincing people to act is evident from a walk-through of Patagonia's own parking lots and offices. SUVs are studded all over the lot, and people are wearing jeans and shirts made from nonsustainable fibers grown with toxic chemicals. Even here, where everyone knows how bad all this stuff is, environmental values are a hard sell" (p. 228).

"No matter how diligent we are at Patagonia in trying to cause less harm to the environment with our business, everything we make causes some waste and pollution. So the next step in our responsibility is to pay for our sins until such a time that we hope we can stop sinning" (p. 228).

"I'd like to be able to get companies to give just 1 percent to the environment and to feel the same commitment and satisfactions that Mormons feel when they give 10 percent of their incomes to their church every year. Their tithing assures the church will take care of them if they should lose the farm. For me, the solution to the world's problems is easy: We have to take action, and if we can't do it ourselves, we've got to dig into our pockets. The scariest moment is writing that first check, but you know what, the next day things go on: The phone still rings, there's food on the table, and the world is a little bit better. As Mahatma Gandhi said, 'You must be the change you wish to see in the world" (p. 252).

Overall, an inspiring book. Be the change. Act. Sustain. And support people and businesses who do.
